When families relocate to Northeast Ohio, I get the same question over and over: "Which Cleveland suburb is right for us?" And every time, my answer starts the same way: there is no single right answer. But there are communities that consistently rise to the top for relocating families, and in 2026, four suburbs keep coming up in my conversations with corporate transferees, out-of-state buyers, and military families.

I've helped hundreds of families navigate this decision as a Certified Relocation Professional (CRP) and as a member of a Top 1% real estate team nationwide, recognized by RealTrends for over a decade. I know these suburbs not from a brochure but from walking through homes, meeting neighbors, and watching families settle in and thrive. Here is an honest breakdown of Solon, Strongsville, Westlake, and Avon — the data you need and the local knowledge that data doesn't capture.

"The best suburb is the one that fits your life, not the one with the highest rating. I help relocating families match their priorities to the right community — schools, commute, budget, and the feeling you get when you drive through the neighborhood."

Why These Four Suburbs?

Northeast Ohio has dozens of excellent communities, but Solon, Strongsville, Westlake, and Avon stand out for one critical reason: they offer the combination that relocating families need most. Each has a top-rated school district, a safe and established neighborhood environment, a reasonable commute to both Cleveland and Akron, and a range of housing options that fits the $200K to $1.5M price range most of my clients are working with. They also cover the geographic spread — eastern suburbs (Solon), southern suburbs (Strongsville), and western suburbs (Westlake and Avon) — so wherever your job is, there is a community nearby.

Solon — The Gold Standard for Education

Solon consistently ranks as the top school district in the Cleveland metro area. The Solon City School District earned Ohio's #1 Report Card for achievement, and Solon High School is ranked #2 in Ohio for college prep according to Niche. For relocating families who prioritize academics above all else, Solon is the obvious answer.

The median home price in Solon sits in the $450,000 to $594,000 range in 2026, reflecting the premium that top-tier schools command. The community of roughly 24,000 residents is established, with well-maintained neighborhoods, strong city services, and a location that puts you roughly 20 minutes from University Circle and the Cleveland Clinic. For corporate transferees, Sherwin-Williams, Progressive, and University Hospitals are all within an easy commute.

What I tell relocating families about Solon: if school rankings are your north star, this is where you land. But be prepared for a competitive market. Homes in Solon move quickly, and pricing is firm. You are paying for the district, and in my experience, families who choose Solon feel the investment pays off.

Strongsville — Value, Space, and Community

Strongsville is the largest suburb on this list, with a population of roughly 45,400, and it offers one of the strongest value propositions in Cuyahoga County. The Strongsville City School District earns an overall A rating from Niche, with strong proficiency rates — 78% in math and 81% in reading — and Strongsville High School ranks among the top 60 public high schools in Ohio.

Median home prices in Strongsville range from $357,000 to $400,000, making it significantly more accessible than Solon or Westlake while still delivering a top-tier school experience. The homes tend to offer more square footage and larger lots for the price, which is a major draw for growing families who want space for children to play and room to spread out.

Strongsville's location is another advantage: you are roughly 20 minutes from downtown Cleveland via I-71, and about the same distance from Cleveland Hopkins International Airport. The SouthPark Mall area provides shopping and dining, and the city's recreation department is one of the most active in the county. For relocating families who want strong schools, a genuine community feel, and more house for their money, Strongsville is a top contender.

Westlake — Established Affluence with Lake Erie Access

Westlake sits on Cleveland's west side, about 15 minutes from downtown and minutes from Lake Erie. The Westlake City School District is rated A overall by Niche and ranks #7 in the Cleveland area and #18 in Ohio. Westlake High School holds an A rating and ranks #36 among public high schools statewide. With a student-teacher ratio of 15:1 and strong proficiency scores — 78% in math and 83% in reading — this is a district that delivers.

The median home value in Westlake is approximately $368,000 to $448,000, depending on the source, with single-family homes ranging broadly. The community of roughly 34,000 residents is well-established, with mature landscaping, excellent parks, and the popular Crocker Park mixed-use development nearby. The median household income of roughly $115,000 reflects the area's professional demographic. Westlake is especially popular with corporate transferees working at Cleveland Clinic, University Hospitals, and the many corporate headquarters along the I-90 and I-480 corridors.

What I tell families about Westlake: if you want an established community with top schools, access to Lake Erie, and a short commute to downtown Cleveland or the west side job centers, this is a strong choice. The housing stock is more established than newer suburbs, which means you are buying character and location rather than brand-new construction.

Avon — The Fastest-Growing Family Community

Avon, in Lorain County, is one of the fastest-growing communities in Northeast Ohio. The population has grown more than 3% since the 2020 census, now sitting at roughly 25,700 residents. And there is a reason families keep moving here: the Avon Local School District is rated in the top 5% of public schools in Ohio, with Avon High School ranked #35 in the state and Avon Middle School ranked #1 in Lorain County.

Median home prices in Avon range from approximately $365,000 to $495,000, depending on the neighborhood and whether you are buying existing construction or new build. The median household income of roughly $136,000 to $146,000 reflects a community of professionals who have chosen Avon for its combination of new construction, strong schools, and family-oriented atmosphere. The community has invested heavily in parks, recreation, and infrastructure to keep pace with its growth.

Avon is roughly 25 minutes from downtown Cleveland and sits near the I-90 and SR-83 interchange. It is a popular choice for families relocating to work at Cleveland Clinic's main campus or the many corporate offices in western Cuyahoga and eastern Lorain counties. For relocating families who want a newer home, a growing community, and an excellent school system without the price premium of some eastern suburbs, Avon deserves serious consideration.

How to Choose Between Them

If I had to simplify it: Solon is for families who put education above everything else. Strongsville is for families who want the best value in a top school district. Westlake is for families who want an established community with Lake Erie access and a short downtown commute. Avon is for families who want new construction and a growing community with excellent schools at a reasonable price point.

But here is the truth: none of these descriptions will tell you how a community actually feels. That takes boots on the ground. That takes walking the neighborhoods, talking to the neighbors, and understanding what matters to your family. I have done this for hundreds of relocating families, and I can help you do the same.

Whether you are relocating from across the state or across the country, I would love to help you find the right Cleveland suburb for your family. The best time to start the conversation is before you need to make a decision under pressure.
