The Last Weekend of September in Northeast Ohio
Fall Festivals, Foliage Season & Buying a Home in Medina, Ohio

The last weekend of September is the region's busiest community weekend of the fall, and this year it is spread across every county: the Medina Fall Festival and Oktoberfest on the Square, an applefest in Shaker Heights, a food truck challenge in Westlake, and the Rocky River Fall Fest closing it out on Sunday. It is also the week the fall real estate market hits its stride, with the best inventory of the year arriving as rates hold near 6.75%. Here is what is happening September 26 and 27 across the region, and what the market numbers mean if you are thinking about buying a home in Medina, Ohio.

Every year I tell families scouting Northeast Ohio the same thing: if you want to understand a community, do not come for a quiet Tuesday. Come on a festival weekend, when a town shows you exactly what it is. The last weekend of September is the best one on the calendar for that, and this year it is spread beautifully across Medina, Summit, and Cuyahoga counties, from the Square in Medina to the lakefront in Rocky River. Best part: it lines up with the start of the fall market's peak inventory window. Here is where to be, what to look for, and where the numbers stand if you are thinking about buying a home in Medina, Ohio.

Archived September 29, 2026: The September 26 and 27 festival weekend has wrapped up, and the Shaker Heights AppleFest, Crocker Park Food Truck Challenge, Rocky River Fall Fest, and the Medina Fall Festival have concluded for the year. For what is happening across Northeast Ohio right now, see my Columbus Day Weekend Guide, the First Weekend of October Guide, and the September 24 Market Update.

Saturday, September 26: A Region Full of Fall Days

Medina's big day on the Square is the anchor, and I wrote the full rundown in my Late September events guide: the Medina Fall Festival from 9am to 2pm and the Medina County Oktoberfest from 1pm to 8pm, both within walking distance of the houses families tour every weekend. But the same Saturday is packed across the region, and each event is a useful window into a different slice of the market.

  • AppleFest at the Shaker Historical Society: Saturday, September 26, noon to 4pm, free, at the Shaker Historical Society museum in Shaker Heights. The fifth annual celebration brings live music, craft demonstrations, museum tours, and family activities to one of the region's most storied communities. For buyers, this is the east side at its most neighborly, with Shaker's distinctive homes, deep tree canopy, and top-ranked schools right outside the museum door.
  • Food Truck Challenge at Crocker Park: Saturday, September 26, 11am to 4pm, on Main Street at Crocker Park in Westlake. The 11th annual challenge lines up some of the region's best food trucks in the heart of one of Northeast Ohio's most successful town-center developments. Crocker Park is effectively Westlake's front porch, a walkable mix of shops, restaurants, and residences that shows exactly why the west shore suburbs draw so many relocating families.
  • Medina Fall Festival & Medina County Oktoberfest: Saturday, September 26, on Public Square in Medina. Hay maze, pumpkin painting, live music, an apple cider press, a chili cook-off, and the farmers market from morning until early afternoon, then German food and music at the Oktoberfest from 1pm to 8pm. If you are considering the Medina City Schools footprint, this is the single best day of the year to feel what the Square is really like.

Sunday, September 27: Rocky River Fall Fest & 5K

The weekend closes on the lakefront. The Rocky River Fall Fest & 5K runs Sunday, September 27, with the Hilliard Hustle 5K and Kids Sprint kicking off in the morning and the main Fall Fest from 2pm to 6pm at the City of Rocky River, 21012 Hilliard Boulevard. Think hayrides, a pumpkin patch, food trucks, and a neighborhood-scale festival in a city that sits right on Lake Erie.

Rocky River is a fascinating community to see this way because it is genuinely different from Medina: a mature, walkable lakefront suburb with a busy downtown, excellent schools, and homes ranging from historic Tudors to modern lake-side builds. It draws buyers who want the lake lifestyle with Cleveland 20 minutes away, and it is the kind of place where a Sunday festival brings out the whole town. If you have been weighing "county seat charm versus lakefront energy," this one afternoon answers a lot of questions.

The Week After: Comedy Festival, Foliage & an October Preview

The momentum carries straight into October. The Cleveland Comedy Festival returns September 30 through October 3 for its 19th year, with more than 30 comedians performing at venues across Ohio City and Duck Island, just west of downtown. It is a great excuse to spend an evening in one of Cleveland's most popular neighborhoods, where historic homes, breweries, and new construction sit a few blocks apart. It is also a reminder that the city side of the market rewards the people who know it.

And the leaves are about to do their part. Leaves across Medina, Cuyahoga, and Lorain counties are already starting to turn, with peak color arriving in mid-October, roughly October 6 through 20 per cleveland.com and WKYC, with the Akron and Medina areas about a week behind. Cleveland's normal first frost lands around October 14, which means the next two weeks are prime foliage-touring weather, perfect for touring homes and neighborhoods under the season's best light.

On the farm calendar, the Bauman Orchards Fall Festival returns Saturday, October 3 in Rittman, Wayne County, with apple picking, pumpkins, and the farm market about 25 minutes from Medina. October 2 through 11 is also Medina Restaurant Week, a delicious excuse to spend an evening downtown while you are here. Between foliage, festivals, and the market's peak inventory, early October is quietly the smartest window of the year for a buyer or seller who is ready to move.

Market Pulse: Rates Hold, Inventory Climbs

Now the numbers everyone asks about. Freddie Mac's Primary Mortgage Market Survey put the 30-year fixed at 6.76% for the week ending September 10, up from 6.71% the prior week, after a brief mid-month touch of 7%, the first time rates crossed that line since May 2025. Some daily purchase-rate trackers were sitting near 6.9% by mid-September. A year ago, the same rate was 6.35%. The trend is a slow drift rather than a spike, and it is not stopping qualified buyers who have already adjusted their expectations.

On official data, the Ohio REALTORS July report remains the freshest statewide read: 12,723 home sales, a statewide median of $285,000, and 39,641 active listings, each up modestly year over year. The August statewide report had not been released as of this writing. Locally, the picture I see on the ground matches the reports: Cuyahoga County's suburban single-family median stands at $236,400 with 19 days to pending, Summit County holds a $250,000 median at 19 days on market with a 100% sale-to-list ratio, and Medina County homes typically sell in the $330,000 range per Redfin, with Zillow's typical value near $307,000. For the full county-by-county breakdown, see my Mid-September market update.

What matters most is supply. New listings have been climbing since the second week of September as sellers who waited out the summer finally list, and the traditional peak of the fall selling season sits right here: late September into early October. That means the best selection of the year is arriving now, and it is arriving for buyers who are pre-approved and ready to act. Families are winning this market with intentional touring, clean offers, and honest pricing conversations. A quarter point on the rate is not what decides this market. Preparation does.

What It Means for Buyers, Sellers, and Relocating Families

For buyers: get pre-approved before the festival, then use the weekend to see three very different sides of the region in two days. Start Saturday at the Square in Medina, wander Shaker if the east side is on your list, Sunday in Rocky River. You will learn more about which community fits you than a month of scrolling.

For sellers: this is your strongest stretch of the year. The buyers touring these festivals are the same buyers touring your open house, and the fall pool is one of the deepest of the year. Price honestly, present well, and list before the holiday slowdown, and you capture the families who have been waiting all year.

For relocating families: if you can make one trip this fall, make it the next two weeks. You can sample a lakefront suburb, an east-side classic, and a county-seat town with a top school district in a single weekend, see the leaves at their best, and walk into the deepest inventory of the season. Fourteen years and more than 1,300 homes into this business, I have watched families find their place this exact way.
